Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form and the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

We might send an anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. We would not send your actual email address. The Gravatar service Privacy Policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/.

After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as it would if you visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. We have no control over the actions of other sites.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. We do not otherwise share your data with anyone.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users who register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or remove their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, individuals may have the right to:

  • be informed about how personal data is used;
  • request access to personal data;
  • request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal data;
  • request erasure in certain circumstances;
  • request restriction of processing in certain circumstances;
  • object to processing in certain circumstances;
  • request data portability where applicable; and
  • withdraw consent at any time where consent is the basis relied on.

Requests may be made using the contact details set out in this policy. Proof of identity may be required before a request is actioned.

How to complain

If there are any concerns about how personal data is handled, a complaint may be made by using the website contact form.

A complaint will be acknowledged within 30 days of receipt and appropriate steps will then be taken to investigate and respond without undue delay. The outcome of the complaint will be communicated as soon as reasonably possible.

If a complaint is not resolved satisfactorily, there is also a right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. Information about the ICO is available at ico.org.uk.
